MPAs Defined IUCN–The Wo rld Conserva t i o n Union defines an MPA as “any area of the intertidal or subtidal terrain, together with its ove rlying wa ter and associated flora , fa u n a , h i s torical and cultural feature s , which has been reserved by law or other effective means to protect part or all of the enclosed env i ro n m e n t ” (Kelleher 1999). Marine space can be designated in different ways depending on the management goals for a particular area so that the degree of protection may vary: from reserves prohibiting all extractive activities, such as fishing and mining, to areas that allow various forms of sustainable exploitation.
